SPOTLIGHT: The New Mexico Music Educators Association - (NMMEA) is comprised of 525 teachers, retired teachers and collegiate members. Over 2,400 students (grades 9-12) in 89 school districts are currently enrolled in music programs throughout New Mexico. To help ensure public support for music education, the NMMEA recently appointed an Advocacy Chair and divided the state up into six districts to activate local community members and develop strategic partnerships. One such alliance will focus on outreach to symphony orchestras statewide; another targeted distribution of advocacy materials to legislators, school board members and community members. A mentoring program offers support to music teachers in their first years of service by pairing them with retired and current educators, if requested. Get ready for Back-to-School this summer - build support for music education in your community by creating a local music coalition.

FOCUS ON STUDENTS: Music Education Advocacy For the Digital Generation

Ask any veteran music teacher, and they will most likely agree: students in our classrooms are very different than those ten or twenty years ago. Many authors have called them "Digital Natives" or the "Net Generation," and neuroscientists believe that their brains are wired differently than ours. They were "Born Digital" and there is no turning back. Advocates for standards-based public school music education programs must grasp this and understand how technology can help create diverse and relevant classroom learning opportunities. Technology in a music curriculum engages students more fully because it is already a part of their identity and will remain so throughout their lives.
