SPOTLIGHT: The New Mexico Music Educators Association - (NMMEA) is comprised of 525 teachers, retired teachers and collegiate members. Over 2,400 students (grades 9-12) in 89 school districts are currently enrolled in music programs throughout New Mexico. To help ensure public support for music education, the NMMEA recently appointed an Advocacy Chair and divided the state up into six districts to activate local community members and develop strategic partnerships. One such alliance will focus on outreach to symphony orchestras statewide; another targeted distribution of advocacy materials to legislators, school board members and community members. A mentoring program offers support to music teachers in their first years of service by pairing them with retired and current educators, if requested. Get ready for Back-to-School this summer - build support for music education in your community by creating a local music coalition.
